MMO Terminology

Games come with their own acronyms and none more so than the MMORPG, so for those of us that said What ? We’ve put together a short list of the terminology you may come across but not want to ask. As always, ask but these may help too:

MMORPG: Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. It’s just what is says.

PvE – Player vEnvironment. It’s you against the game. Though be aware that some areas such as Cyrodiil and the Imperial City offer both PvE and PvP.

PvP – Player vPlayer – You are fighting in Cyrodiil or the Imperial City against players from the other alliances.

PvX – Usually seen in guild recruitment where the guild participates in both PvP and PvE.

AoEArea of Effect. Anything, damage or healing, which affects an area and not a single player. Check the ground for red circles, especially when taking on a boss who can have multiple and/or large areas. Archers also have them, if you’re within that red area, you’re getting hit.

PROC Programmed Random OCcurrence. This refers to the benefits of additional damage or other buffing enhancement that occurs randomly when an item strikes or is used.

DPS – Damage Per Second. The role that everyone wants – to inflict as much damage as possible.

Tank – Their high level armour, health and resistance levels allow the Tank to withstand high levels of assault allowing them to aggro the enemy, leaving the DPS characters to inflict damage without suffering too high a level of attack.

Healer– The role is self explanatory, this character heals the Tank and DPS characters but is capable of inflicting damage as well.

Group – Groups may be large or small in general play, but in dungeons you are typically restricted to 4 players. An ideal group would consist of a Tank, 2 DPS and a Healer. Though it is perfectly viable in many cases for a DPS to double up as a Tank or offer some healing assistance.

Mobs – In PvE, the enemy characters who spawn in the same area periodically.

Adds  – In PvE, the additional enemies spawned by the enemy, usually refers to those that appear in a boss fight because they could be numerous.
